Who Doesn't Love Mint?

Did you hear?

Who- Friends of Mint Plaza, Martin Building Company, SF Museum & Historical Society, Livable City, Neighborhood Parks Council, SF Bicycle Coalition, Senior Action Network, SF housing Action Coalition and SPUR.

What- The Mint Plaza official grand opening party.

When- Friday, November 16, 2007 from 10:00am-Noon.

Where- Adjacent to the historic U.S. Mint building- Jessie and Mint St's. @ 5th.

Why- Because it's a Party! Also, because it's the beginning of an agenda that our local government wants to push, closure of streets to car traffic for a transit first policy that will alleviate congestion, pollution, and stress.

170 Off-Third

170 Off-Third is a new condominium building located on Townsend at 3rd street.

One interesting aspect about the building is its extensive art installations.  Surrounding the pool is a hand-wrought blackened steel fence depicting a botanically inspired thicket of leaves, bamboo and curling vines embellished with vivid glass blossoms that meander through the tropical landscaping.  A wall-sized glass art installation presides over the clubroom fireplace  "The Gods of Baseball" features nine larger-than-life mythological creatures playing baseball acriss the King Street facade.

In the October 28th edition of the San Francisco Chronicle, Julian Guthrie wrote about the most recent piece of art intalled on the side of the building.  The five pieces of stainless steel is titled "Artifacts from a Coal Mine."  It weighs over 10,000 pounds.  Click on San Francisco Chronicle to read the article.

Since I am a native of a small coal mining town in Western Pennsylvania, Coal Run,  I plan to take a look at the installation..
